Scary stats
In a normal year, we’re hard at work advising our clients.
In the last 12 months, our busyness has been off the scale.
Thanks to the pandemic, more employers than ever have needed our help to ensure they do the right things, operate in the right way, and stay out of employment tribunals.
Unfortunately, not all employers have been so conscientious, and the latest stats drum that point home.
Between October and December 2020, Employment Tribunal claims rose 25% for single claims, and by 82% for multiple claims, when compared to the same quarter in 2019.
The number of single claims (a whopping 13,225) also represents the highest number lodged in a quarter for nearly ten years.
It’s not hard to work out whether this increase has come from – mass redundancy and changes in employment terms caused by the pandemic has had more people than ever claiming that they’ve been dismissed unfairly.
And in case you’re wondering, A LOT of these cases resulted in employers paying out – 27% were settled through ACAS, and another 7% were successful, which means over a third of the employers had to pay something to their employee.
That’s also without taking into account the expense of going to tribunal, which many thousands of employers also had to endure.
The truth is that it’s never been easier to take an employer to tribunal – it costs an employee nothing, but it can cost you everything.
