Chances are you’ve heard that it’s ‘tough out there’ for job seekers.
It’s undoubtedly true, which makes it even more important for candidates to ensure that they’re doing the very best they possibly can.
And in our attempt to hire an Executive Assistant, I’ve seen plenty of them not just failing to do their best, but actively shooting themselves in the foot.
Our recruitment process goes through four stages – stage one, send through a covering letter with your CV, explaining why they’d like to be my assistant. Extra points if you can make me smile.
Of the 38 applicants, 15 sent covering letters. Goodbye to the 23 who didn’t bother.
Of the 15, only two addressed the letter to me, and completed the task as set out in the job ad. Au revoir to another 13.
Yes, it might be “tough out there”, but if you can’t do the basics well, the chances of you being the right fit? Zero.
An honourable mention must go to Candidate A, who – fair play to her – did send a covering letter, but a general one.
However, the letter was addressed to Whalen, rather than Wahlen – it always pays to proofread!
It might seem trivial, but when you’re looking for an Executive Assistant, attention to detail is right at the top of the list.
Moral of the story? Yes, it’s tough out there, but if you’re looking for a job, give yourself a fighting chance.
And if you’re recruiting like me, putting in place several stages can save you plenty of time and an expensive mistake…
