Just mowing the grass

Just mowing the grass

I was talking the Chair of Greens at a golf club recently, and they had a few challenges with getting enough greenkeepers to look after all the greens.

No matter, he told me, they had a Plan B.

The plan?

“I know a chap who mows my lawn – I’ll just ask him to come in and help us out”.

Before you get too outraged, this story is almost 100% fiction, but it raises an important point.

You see, no Chair of Greens would EVER suggest that solution.

They understand that there is a lot more to looking after a golf course than just “mowing the grass”.

They know it takes time, skill and experience to look after the courses, and getting someone in who doesn’t know what they’re doing could have a pretty disastrous outcome.

But here’s the thing: I have the equivalent conversation with business owners about employment advice ALL the time.

They think that following all the rules is just “mowing the grass”, anyone can do it, and they don’t need to bring in expertise to help ensure they stay compliant.

Sometimes they’ll get contracts off the internet, sometimes they’ll ask a retired solicitor, sometimes they’ll just hand the job to an admin in the office.

Whatever they do, it rarely works, and just like letting a man with a mower loose on a golf course can have significant repercussions, so too does leaving your employment law in the hands of someone who has no clue what they’re doing.

If you’re guilty of that and you haven’t been caught out yet, then I’ve got good news – we can fix it, but you need to act fast, before it’s too late.

Get in touch and we’ll give you the benefit of our genuine expertise.
