But what about the businesses who have grown to 5 or 6 staff and not sorted out their HR? What about the start-ups who are just beginning to take on staff? Or the one-man bands who are thinking about expanding? Who’s helping them?

If you’ve just started to employ staff or you’re thinking about it, the fact of the matter is that you probably haven’t spent a huge amount of time thinking about how to “ensure compliancy” or how to make certain that you’ve dotted all the ‘i’s’ and crossed all the ‘t’s’. You’re more likely to be thinking about ways you can grow your business and add to your bottom line; not forms, contracts and legal matters.
And to some extent, that’s how it should be.

You see, the law states that you must follow a certain set of rules and regulations regarding the way you deal with staff before, during and after their employment.
There does seem to be a tendency among small business owners to regard HR, and managing their staff effectively, as something purely optional.
That couldn’t be further from the truth. HR is for every employer, whatever stage they’re at in their business journey.
Whether you’ve taken on an apprentice and it’s just you and them, or you’re paying Auntie Flo for part-time work; the moment you start employing someone – no matter how close you are to them – HR comes into play in a big, BIG way; and if you ignore it, then you can open yourself up to a whole can of worms.
Now, you’re probably thinking, “What’s the worst that can happen?”, and to be honest, I understand. After all, when you’re employing family and friends, there’s no issue, right?

You’re going to want to take action to safeguard that future.
In my experience, when a business owner starts to realise that they need help with their HR they’ll do one of two things in Gap HR – DIY HR:
1) First of all, they try to do it themselves. They’ll surf the net, looking for resources that are appropriate for their business, or they’ll try and adapt employment contracts given to them by a previous employer ten years ago – forgetting the fact that the law has changed umpteen times since then.
2) Secondly, they might opt to use an employment solicitor. Which is fine, if you want to pay around £3000 for the privilege. Which most small business owners don’t want to spend on HR, full stop.
A while back I started to realise that if these were the only options available to small business owners, something had to be done. My goal has always been to help as many businesses as possible to remain compliant and succeed, and if I’m being really honest, Gap HR has done a really good job at helping lots of businesses.
But what about all of these other businesses?
The ones that can’t afford ‘traditional’ HR consultancy and support?
