I’ve been solving staff issues for years, and that combined with bringing up two young kids historically hasn’t left me with much time.
These days though, with the business going well and the kids more independent, I now have a small amount of time for myself, and in the last 12 months, I’ve been using to actually start playing golf.
I’d stared longingly at fairways whilst in client meetings for far too long, and I decided it was time to get out on the links and give golf a try.
And I’m not (that) bad. (Certainly no Carin Koch though!)
I’m a member of Goring and Streatley Golf Club (who incidentally were my first ever golf club client), and my plan is to get a beginner’s handicap by the end of the summer!
I know the maximum ladies handicap is 36 (although I feel it ought to be more like 360), and the idea of having my own handicap got me thinking…
Wouldn’t it be good for employers to have a handicap as well, when they start managing staff?
The first year they manage staff, they’re allowed 36 points of “honest mistakes”.
The second year, just 18 points.
The third year, 9 points, and so on.
Each incident would have a standard points value attached:
First letter in redundancy process not issue on time = 2 points.
Incorrect redundancy pool = 6 points.
You get the picture – it’d be a novel way to measure the aptitude of managers, just like we do golfing prowess! What do you reckon, would it catch on?
