Holiday – wise old soul

With better weather and the holidays hurtling towards us, I was reminded of a saying I read a while ago:

“Take time for quietness, and you will free yourself from being influenced by the wrong things”.

They had a point.  Especially when it comes to the workplace.

You see, it’s that time of year again when the employees pour out, slap on their suntan lotion and head off on holiday, leaving a skeleton staff to run the office.

Once you get over the vulnerable feeling of hardly anyone left on your team and the fear that it’ll sap productivity, it’s worth remembering that some good can come from it.

When you’re stuck in the daily grind, it can be very difficult for you to get a fresh perspective on the stuff you do every day.

But in my experience, once you’ve got some real distance – both mentally and physically – from the things you do all the time, it becomes much easier to see clearly on your return.

You’re able to see the ‘bigger picture’ and remember what it’s all about.

You’re in a much better position to prioritise between important and urgent tasks and those that aren’t.

I’ve often found that time out of the office gives me a fresh perspective, and in my experience, that’s the case for the best members of my team too.

What about you?  Are you dreading the skeleton summer or looking forward to it like I am?
